Sol indulged in that possibly most inexcusable
of all to use a highfalootin phrase
luxuries that is or to
wit farming and beit needlessly
added
my Uncle Sol's farm
failed because the chickens
ate the vegetables so
my Uncle Sol had a
chicken farm till the
skunks ate the chickens when
my Uncle Sol
had a skunk farm but
the skunks caught cold and
died so
my Uncle Sol imitated the
skunks in a subtle manner
or by drowning himself in the watertank
but somebody who'd given my Unde Sol a Victor
Victrola and records while he lived presented to
him upon the auspicious occasion of his decease a
scrumptious not to mention splendiferous funeral with
tall boys in black gloves and flowers and everything and
i remember we all cried like the Missouri
when my Uncle Sol's coffin lurched because
somebody pressed a button
(and down went
my Uncle
Sol
and started a worm farm)

We're Back...

Well, my worms and I are back from our vacation...just needed some time to recoup..Yeph..my little worms and I had a restful and eventful stay in Cozumel..snorkeling in blue azure waters and slipping mango margaritas..ha..have you ever seen a worm tipszy..ha..the little margarita glasses were so cute..ha..just joking..I just have too many irons in the fire and a vivid imagination..ha..I work a full time job plus a part-time job at night..I am an artist http://sharonlynjones.blogspot.com/ , junk dealer..I buy and sell antiques and miscellaneous items (sharon.sales on ebay & Sharon Lyn's Books on Amazon)..I can't seem to just sit around and watch tv..ha..I do watch movies when I get a chance..ha..and you say when is that..ha..

Let's Talk About Red Wigglers...

Just to clarify what I sell..I sell Composting Red Wigglers..not the fishing Red Wigglers..ha! My worms wouldnot fit on a hook..they only get about 1" to 3' at the most..they are thin worms...but mighty..ha..they go thru the garbage like mad..pose no problems to raise either..they are good worms for the gardener or pet owner..Garden wise..they are good for lawns, flowerbeds, houseplants and hanging plants..Pet wise..Pet birds, turtles, iguanas, aquarium fish, pond fish, salamanders, snakes and frogs..If you are low on groceries..you could even eat them too..a good source of protein..ha..I might be posting some worm recipes...I don't know if I could eat my worms but in a crunch (no pun intended..ha) who knows..ha...As you can see I am easily amused.. Now if you want a fishing red worm that would be "Super Red Worms." They are supposed to really be great on the hook and they are actually bigger...They wiggle like mad..Suppose to be big like Night Crawlers...Now to find those recipes..ha!

A Red Wiggler Worm Resume..

I will work for food..No meat products please..I am a vegetarians..though I like my java (coffee grounds)..too!

Working Environment: I survive in temperatures anywhere from 38 degrees to 95 degrees Farenheit and the ideal bed temperature range is 70 to 80 degrees Farenheit.

Worm Jobs: I am a hard worker and I eat the waste of humans and turn it into castings. My castings (worm poo) are the mineral and protein rich leavings of worms that will go to create fresh and healthy soil. Without this process, the earth would dry up and then humans have trouble making anything grow..You owe your lives to my species..

Hobbies: Eating vegetable scraps, paper and coffee grounds plus I love to travel..

Goals: To support my family of thousands and create worm castings and worm pee..

How I Got Started Loving Worms..

It's not what you think...ha! Mike would mention it to me every once in awhile about starting a worm business...I would think about it and say "nah, not now." Then I began to just see if it was something I wanted to do. I thought I would give it a try. Before I bought some worms I thought about what I could put them in. One day I was driving down Hillcrest Road in Mobile and I saw a bathtub on the side of the road. Aha! I drive a pickup so it was real easy to load it up. Luckily it was a steel tub and not a cast iron one..ha..anyway I took it home and dragged it into my back yard..I filled it up with a lot of leaves..We have alot of oak trees in Mobile and when its fall weather and everything is drying up people put tons of leaves in bags on the edge of their properties for the city to pick up..I then bought some red wigglers on ebay from a guy in Rhode Island..I was disappointed in the first batch as it was not as described..but the second batch that he sent I put them in the tub..and now I have thousands..ha! I found another tub just recently and I put it out in the backyard with the other one..I also have green container boxes or tubs that I have full of red wigglers..I keep these in my home..I will take a tub, drill holes along the sides, fill it full of scredded paper, put a little dirt into it, the red wigglers and food..they can basically survive on scredded paper..I check on them about two to three times a week to see how they are doing..adding more paper or food..they thrive..and I mean thrive..ha! I collect the worm compost, seperating the compost from the worms thru a screen..then start all over again..It is truly amazing on what these worms can do..So that is all I do..but it is labor intensive. Especially seperating the compost from the worms. I really try to make sure most of the worms are out of the compost as I put the compost into another tub which has no air supply..The worms do what they do and I just help them along..

Let's Talk Weather...

I just had a possible customer asked me about shipping red wigglers in 100 degree weather..I had to do some research..I found that worms "can easily surviving in temperatures between 38 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit." Continuing in my quest I read "Another plus is that Red Wigglers are not as sensitive to temperature and sunlight as common nightcrawlers." So that being said..a little information about my shipping practices. I now package my red wigglers in kordon breathable bags..these bags are used for shipping fish and invertebrates. I pick the worms and put them in the bags the night before shipment. I put some food in the bag too..I leave them open till I get ready to go to the postoffice. I will tape them up, put them in the box, tape the box but not make it air tight. I open the corners of the box so that there is ventilation. I put "Live Worms" on all four sides also labeling the package "Fragile." I pay for Delivery Confirmation because I believe it offers extra incentative to the postal employee to make sure that the package arrives. I now advise my customers to make sure that their postman knows that you are expecting live worms. Also advise them to put them in "full shade" not "partial shade" as the worms will cook. I can also ship to your work address so you can recieve them if you have no one at your home...Its best to have someone to be at your home when you know its being delivered. That's another reason for Delivery Confirmation..you can track your package at www.usps.com ..

Instead Of Counting Sheep I'm Counting Worms...

One worm, two worm...ha! It took me awhile to count 1000 worms...too much intimacy for me..ha! It is labor intensive..but sorta rewarding..knowing that you are sending worms to someone who will be probably just as interested in what they do as I. One more person who can connect with the feeling that they are helping this world to be a better place..letting their worms eat some of the garbage that would put in a land fill..then possibly starting their own business and connecting with other people who will be interested too..I just think that is great. I use to be so wasteful..throwing left over vegetables and paper in the garbage..I now save aluminum cans, glass, vegetable cans and turn them over to the recycleable center on Government Street in Mobile..I pick up metal when I see people throwing it out..even lumber..I have picked up 4 huge piles of lumber that I plan to build some decks, fences, raised gardens, porch and even a greenhouse too..on www.freecycle.com I have been given all sorts of stuff to use..www.craigslist.com is a great site to find all sorts of stuff..

Just A Few Of My Friends..

They look pretty good don't you think..healthy..fat..little worms..they are wiggling (no pun intended..ha) in their own little worm poo..what use to be newsprint, vegetables, coffee grounds, etc..is now this rich brownish-blackish worm compost..your plants would just eat it up..I just read today that red wigglers are good for your lawns..amazing little creatures..don't you think..? I put half the garbage out in my bin because of these worms...I don't think I can go back to wasting so much..

Well, sorta..ha..I make their homes, I bed them down, I feed them nutritious meals, I check on them to make sure they are happy, I brag about them all the time..They are like family...ha..I never thought I would be so interested in worms..Mike, my husband, brought up the idea 10 years ago when we bought a home in Mobile..I told him I wasn't interested..but then about 1 1/2 ago I decided to investigate more..and we decided to start a worm farm..I bought some worms..the rest is history..Mike came up with the name.."The Turning Worm Farm" and "Garbage To Compost, One Bite At A Time!" A Little Background Information.
